I hadn't done this part of the DAG where it was start to finish on the dresses from creating them and also watching them as they arrived to their location and in contact with so many.

In August one of the activites for the Princess Tea Party was to decorate pillowcase for a young girl in Zambia and I was working on a pen pal project with the girls that came to the tea party. The project continued on to Azalea Middle school where my friend Ann is in charge of the Leadership class. The kids in the class painted on the dresses for the girls in Zambia and also wrote letters.

We were able to get the dresses and also some pants made to send off to Washington in December where a lady there would be leaving for the Peace corp in January and take them to Lusaka Zambia.

My friend Evie in Lusaka met with Barbara when she arrived and the dresses were given. The letters will be given at a later date to start the Pen pal project. Below are a couple of pictures girls in their dresses.
I want to thank Ann Voltz, Barbara Smith and Mike and Lynn for helping make this possible and for Evie for being patient while we worked out things to get her the dresses.

I'm doing a project now called fill the Crusier with Pillow Case Dresses and supplies! I will be taking dresses over to my friend Gloria Mama Love Cooper on October 30th for her to take to Uganda with her when she goes in December! I want to fill it up to the brim. Can you help? We need pillowcases,t-shirts (for boys pants) thread, new packages of elastic from 1/4 in to 1 inch, bias tape and any trim you may have. Please purchase packaged items as they will be given to the women in Uganda to sew dresses for girls in thier villages. Thank you. If you have fabric you may send that too. Above are the pictures from the SoDAG Tea Party we did on August 18th 2012. We shared the event with several of the ladies that volenteered for the day and we all had a great time. On each plate we had made a butterfly out of a zip lock baggy filled with jellybeans and a clothes pin. Our crafts were making a paper necklace, and fingerkniting a necklace and decorating pillowcases for future penpals in Zambia. All that came enjoyed the activites.

On July 24th I did a pillowcase dress making event at our
First of all if you'd like to be on my email list as I starting to send out email updates about SoDag and its projects you can email me at Southdag@yahoo.com and I'll add you to my list.

Here's the Challenge:

Start making dresses this week using the patterns at www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com and post your dresses by Sunday May 20th to my FB page "Dress A Girl Around the World-Southern Oregon" and the one with the most dresses I will send you an "Dress A Girl" bottle cap necklace.

If you are wondering where to send the dresses to you can send them to:

SoDAG
C/O Living Waters Foursquare Church
P O Box 2783
Brookings Oregon 97415

These dresses will be set aside for a project that I'm setting up to to to Thailand to help stop the human sex trafficking there. For more information on what my friend will be doing in Thailand go to his blog at www.tongue-thiad.blogspot.com .
I didn't realize how exhausted I was until I got home an hour after it was over! I've got a second one this week on Saturday at Living Waters Foursquare from 10-2 and am expecting great things!

I recieved a huge donation of sheets and pillowcases and blankets and tomorrow I'm maked dresses out of the velour blankets to make for pinafores to go over peasant dresses for girls in the Appalacians for next winter.

I've put feelers out in the Medford area (my stopping grounds!) to see if there is anyone who would like to host a SoDAG event there. Love it when I can go "home" for a couple of days to see my family!
This is a favorite of mine of the peasant dresses that we did recently. At first I was a little hestant of the lizards but it was so cute with the pinafore over it! Awesome!

Getting ready for a big SoDAG event this Wednesday as there is a group of homeschoolers and their moms coming to sew! I've been told where to flip the switch for the breaker if need be! Then another Sodag the following Saturday!

I'm working on a big project to bring more awareness to the plight of our girls in light of the human sex trafficing that is going on aroudn the world. What I'm doing is a small thing, I know but giving a girl a dress made by someone no matter where they are in the little town of Brookings Oregon in the USA or in a third world country nor what the financial status is of the child. Its about bringing dignity and compassion for the child. I've heard stories from adults who attended Good News Clubs as children where for some the snack was the only meal they got for the day. It was the love and compassion of another that made the difference in that child's life.Cheryl Licht-Olsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14737275420894796974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6285028141822138120.post-10904237457097129372012-03-26T23:39:00.000-07:002012-03-26T23:39:50.769-07:00Update on Project Worth and OutreachGot an email today from Mary and the tornado hit the Appalacian area where they are located. For the next few SoDAG sessions we will be working on making peasant dress sets for the girls. I will be looking for pj's also to send and we have a pattern for making nightgowns if you have flannel fabric to donate. Email me at SouthDag@yahoo.com. Thank you.Cheryl Licht-Olsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14737275420894796974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6285028141822138120.post-91587041393137150762012-03-26T10:32:00.000-07:002012-03-26T10:32:28.376-07:00Sodag is expanding! What an awesome couple of months! There was an article in the local paper about SoDag in January,

http://www.currypilot.com/Features/Features/Church-members-sew-clothes-for-third-world-children

and from that it seems as if SoDag has exploded in our area! There are more sewers and more donations coming in for giving a girl a dress of their own.

While searching the net I came across a peasant pattern that I incorporated to use with the pillowcase dress to send to young girls in the Appalachians. We recieved several short sleeved t-shirt dresses from a local organization that we matched up sweaters and sweatshirts for the other girls ( we were short 5 sweaters), and sent several skirt sets ( a skirt made out of a t-shirt and a long sleeve t-shirt to match). Another local store donated socks to go with each dress and there was a donation of bracelets to hekp with the ensemble. So far we've sent two boxes to Project Worth and Outreach.

I am working on trying to do something locally to incorporate what we do around the world. I will give updates as they come about. She is the person in the family to go and get the daily water that they family will use. Just one dress can make a big difference in a young girl that has had to wear the same thing day in and day out, that was given to her that someone else has worn before.

The other important thing about having a new dress: the risk of her getting raped while going for the water declines.

I'll be posting pics from sew fests we've had at our church over the last several months on this blog and also an oppurtunity to help donate to SODAG. If you'd like to donate financially, please make out checks to Living Waters Foursquare Church with "DAG" in the memo. We do need pillowcases, thread, elastic, sewing supplies and other things to keep this ministry running in our area.

Thank you.

CherylCheryl Licht-Olsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14737275420894796974noreply@blogger.com0
